WhatToRead
What to Read?
by Andrea Simanson

There are so many resources out there for parents and it seems you can get lost just trying to choose one. Authors differ in their opinion on parenting.  "Tough love is the key" says one. Another says "Listening is the key."  But how do we really know what is true and what works?

So what are your guidelines for determining if a parenting resource is credible or not? Do you read only certain authors? Do you read what is recommended by friends. How do you decide what you will read and what influences your parenting style?

My approach is to read books from varied authors (some recommended by pastors or friends), others just because the title is interesting and the back cover description and table of contents pursuaded me to read it, others because I've read that author before and liked him or her.

I read books, digest them, apply the principles and see if they work. If something helps us in our parenting, we continue to use it. If it doesn't, we try something else. I read portions of the books to my husband and ask for his thoughts. I talk with him about the principles in the book and we discuss whether or not the principles line up with the Bible (which is our guideline for living). I also lead a small group of women in our church who get together and discuss books that we are reading. If one of them recommends a book, I read it.

Have you read a good parenting book lately? If not, maybe it's time.
